City Club of Eugene

Annual Meeting

May 21, 2021

Call to Order 12:00

Open Meeting and Set Agenda – Scott Coltrane. Welcome! We’ve had a great year in the face of unique challenges. We continue to make progress on our mission of creating a healthier, stronger, more equitable community through open discourse.

Annual Reports – Thank you to all our talented and dedicated committee members!

  1. Treasurer – Skip Coburn – Our club is in very good financial condition. We’re so grateful to those engaging in development efforts and to our generous sponsors. Our financial outlook is optimistic!
  2. Program Committee – Joel Korin – We can take great pride in our excellent programming over the past year, and we have great programs coming up as well. The committee has thrived with the support of wonderful new members. Using Zoom has worked well to host out-of-town speakers and this will continue to be an option for us. Please be sure to send the committee your ideas or to inquire about joining this important committee!
  3. Media Committee – Marilyn Milne. The media committee records our programs and then edits them for publication on KLCC and digital platforms. This year, a brand-new project of creating podcasts was successfully accomplished. Additionally, a new website was created with search engine optimization. Ongoing projects include production of the City Club newsletter.
  4. Membership Committee– Ralph Pledger – Your membership committee has been monitoring and promoting membership renewals. The committee also has addressed diversifying our membership. Finally, it has updated our membership fee structure with improvements: There is a new student membership of $10. There is one $95 standard annual membership for new and renewing members. And, the committee restructured organization memberships to include small business and non-profit businesses as two different categories with different rates.  The new membership fees will likely be implemented starting July 1, 2021.
  5. Development Committee – Marti Ravits – Last summer’s campaign was our first annual campaign and was very successful. Our ultimate goal was to raise $20,000 and we did it! Additionally, sponsorship engagement is strong. All this has allowed us to make much-needed technological improvements and more. Thank you so very much to our donors!
  6. Venue Committee Report – Mary Leighton This standing committee is searching for somewhere for us to sit! We are looking for both meeting and office space. The committee has conducted a wide search. Some venues remain shuttered and are not providing bids. However, exciting possibilities include space at the First Methodist Church and also the downtown LCC building. The First United Methodist Church, sometimes called “the toaster church,” is our lowest bidder so far. The community room is familiar to many members as the gathering place for many civic groups. Our return to meeting in person is (hopefully) likely to be the Friday after Labor Day. To be considered to help us expand our audience:  rotating venues and different meeting times.

Thank you to Departing Board Members — Scott Coltrane. We have several departing board members:  Joshua Burstein, Margaret Hallock, Katherine Schacht, Eric Richardson – thank you so much for the significant contributions you have made to City Club of Eugene!

Summary of the Election Process and Results – Silver Mogart – Our voting process was successfully accomplished as designated by our bylaws. We had 132 potential voters. 10 percent is a quorum. 40 votes were received for 30% participation.

Introducing City Club Board Members –

President Kitty Piercy – Kitty joins us as a former legislator, former Mayor and lifetime civic activist. Kitty is enthusiastic to be embarking on her Presidency as a new and exciting venture.

President-Elect Kaarin Knudson – Kaarin is an architect and urban designer who teaches at the U of O.  She serves on the program committee. She discovered City Club listening to KLCC so this aspect of our reach is particularly notable to her.

Board Members Skip Coburn – Skip is a retired commercial banker who has been serving as Treasurer of our Club. He joined City Club immediately upon his arrival in Eugene after reading about us in the Register Guard.

Board Member Andrew Kalloch – Andrew is Co-Chair of the Tech Association of Oregon. His family is his long-time source of inspiration for civic engagement. He appreciates the solution-oriented discussions that are held at City Club.

Board Member Juan-Carlos Molleda – Juan-Carlos was not able to join us today, but sends Club membership his very best wishes.

Board Member Sandy Smalley – Sandy is a retired veterinarian and former business owner. She serves on our membership committee. She takes the responsibility of her Directorship very seriously, is enthusiastic about promoting the Club, and looks forward to seeing members soon in person.

Opportunity and Open Floor for Questions was offered.

Discussion about the Coming Year – Kitty – This past year has shown us the importance of and need for civic conversation with diverse voices. Many problems face our nation and many people don’t feel included. We will continue our focus on including more people here in our own vicinity via civic conversation and fellowship. Kitty expressed the significant energy she plans to bring to City Club and is very enthusiastic about our upcoming year!

Thank you so, so, so much to our now Past President Scott Coltrane and to our wonderful Executive Director Silver Mogart!

Adjournment:  1:02 pm.

Respectfully submitted J. Ingrid Kessler, DVM, Board Secretary
